Bio:
Three-year starter who earned First Team All-SEC honors in 2016, leading the conference with five interceptions and breaking up a team-high 12 passes in addition to making 43 tackles. Posted 59 tackles (4.5 for loss), one interception and a team-leading eight pass breakups as a junior in 2015. Sophomore totals include 36 tackles (two for loss), three interceptions and 10 PBUs. Started two games in place of E.J. Gaines as a true freshman. Ranks seventh in school history with 10 career interceptions.
Pos:
Slightly undersized but tough cornerback who can line up in dime packages at the next level. Instinctive, effectively reads and diagnoses the action and tracks the ball in the air. Quick flipping his hips transitioning downfield, gets his head back around and competes to defend the throw. Fires out of his plant to the play, has a burst of closing speed and quickly makes his way up the field to defend screen passes and running plays. Does not back down to a challenge and takes on bigger opponents to make the stop.
Neg:
Possesses poor hands for the interception. Loses out in battles. Struggles staying on the receiver’s hip out of breaks.
Analysis:
Penton plays tough, intelligent and athletic football and could line up over the slot receiver or in a zone defense on Sundays.
